Triston Harper made a splash on this past season of “American Idol,” making it all the way to the final five.

It was an impressive performance for such a young singer, and during the show fans got to learn a lot about Harper. That included several scenes where he spoke to his girlfriend — Paris — and talked about his love for her.

Turns out, just months later, Paris isn’t his girlfriend anymore. She is his wife, and at just 16, Harper is going to be a father. He announced it all on Facebook, first posting about the marriage on Nov. 6, and then sharing a photo with Paris announcing the pregnancy.

The couples’ age meant that the news was greeted with a mixed reaction from his followers.

“Too young,” one person wrote. “Way too young to be parents. Babies having babies.”

“Man I had hoped for more for him … very talented singer … too bad he didn’t have better parents who actually raised him,” another wrote. “He had to be caretaker to his mom and siblings so long he doesn’t know which was is up. Hopefully cycles not repeating themselves … I hope he keeps his record deal and becomes a big deal one day … huge responsibility for young teens … prayers sent!”

There were plenty of comments like that, but others were supportive.

“Yes you’re young, but you can make a great life together, put God first in your marriage, honor your commitment to each other, work hard, forgive and serve each other, keep pride out of your marriage, be humble and Pray!” another person wrote. “God bless your life together and your precious child on the way! Thank you for choosing life for your baby!”

Harper comes from humble beginnings, which was noted on the show, and Taste of Country reported that he has still been dealing with struggles since his “Idol” season ended. The site said he asked everyone back on Oct. 2 to help his family find a better place to live. He said then his mother’s house “did not have sheet rock or insulation or wiring, no flooring no furniture.”

“We have one mattress and a blowup mattress,” he added. “I’m asking everyone who will please help me and my family live in a better place we have running water, but it’s not put together right.”
