HENRON COUNTY, KY — Kentucky schools near and far are filling classrooms with pink on Monday, Aug. 19, to honor a Henderson County 4th-grade girl who suddenly died during recess on her first day of school.
On 9-year-old Luciana “Lucy” Laine Nash’s first day of school, she collapsed at recess, where her heart stopped for several minutes.
The community quickly rushed her to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis, going as far as shutting down intersections.
Her dad, Ryan Nash, announced she was brain-dead on Aug. 13.
“We got nine years, 56 days of abundant, joyous, carefree, and compassionate life together. And despite the unexplainable agony, I’m glad for every hour,” said Ryan.
Since her death, the Henderson County community began rallying around the grieving family, raising funds, providing resources, and spreading Lucy’s story as near and far as western Kentucky in the Local 6 region.
McCracken, Carlisle, and Crittenden Counties announced they are asking students and staff across their schools to wear pink on Monday, Aug. 19, in remembrance of Lucy Nash.
“Lucy loved the color pink, and in her honor, McCracken County Schools will join districts across the state in wearing pink on Monday… let’s come together to show our support for Lucy and her family,” said McCracken County Public Schools on Facebook.
Lucy’s family says this young girl will live on as the family plans to donate her organs to help as many people as possible.
“Keeping her heart going maximizes the good she can do. All she ever wanted to do was good,” said Ryan.
